Netscape Navigator: basic commands
Here are some basic commands for using Netscape Navigator, this
information is neccessary to use the World World Web. There are
many tools and options available on Netscape this section shall
introduce you to the essential commands other things you will
pick up as you get more confident with the browser.
Using The Tool Bar
Back and Forward Buttons allow you to toggle between pages on the web
that you have already visited. This is useful for many applications,
for eg when using search engines.
Exercise
Within the IDEA web site use the forward and back buttons to move
between the different pages that we have set out, can you see any
possible problems of manouvering through the pages that you have
visited using these keys?
The Reload and Image Buttons
The Reload button calls up information from the page if you find that
it has been corrupted. If you visit a page where the information has
been interupted, for eg if the images do not come in or the page is
downloading very slowly then by clikcing this button you can often
refresh the operation and be more succesful the second time around.
The Image button allows you to pick up images when you may have already
selected the no image option. It is advantageous to select no images
sometimesbecause it speeds up the process of downloading. However if
you change your mind and want to view the images in a document then by
clicking on the Image button you can then download the images too.
Exercise
Go to View and make sure that Load Images is not ticked. Now load the
idea site into your browser. Do you have the usual dingbat images Y/N?
Now click on the Image button. Do you have the usual dingbat images Y/N?
The STOP Button
The STOP button terminates a download. Sometimes you may decide you
want to stop downloading because it is taking too long or because you
clicked on the wrong link. This button can be used in conjunction with
the reload button to refresh a download as mentioned above.
Exercise
Next time you have a slow download go to STOP and then to Reload. When
you do this come back to this page providing the following information.
