Bookmarks and Start-up Pages

    Bookmarks

It is useful to have some option to record information that you want to keep hold of, for example if you find a page that you feel would be useful to you in a later project, but do not want to download it you can book mark it for easy access to it later.

    Exercise: Creating a book mark

When you find a search engine that you like, use the Bookmark button, pull down the menu and go to ADD BOOKMARK, release the mouse button and you should find that the page that you are on is recorded on the book mark list at the bottom of the menu. Now use this earch engine to find a page of interest to you and bookmark this.

    Exercise: Using Bookmarks

Now go to a new Browser page and instead on entering an URL or doing a search go to bookmark and open the page that you marked previously, again by going to that page on your list and clicking on the page that you want.

    Managing Bookmarks

Using the bookmarks manager, under Windows menu, you can create bookmark files by importing URLs that you want to keep a record of and keep filed in a comprehensive order. For Example you could have a folder named SPORT and within that folder you can create folders for all the different sports that you are interested in and have found information on on-line.

    Exercise

Use the bookmark option for a while and when you have a few pages marked come back and create a comprehensive list of folders and if neccessasry create folders within folders to help you organise the information that you are collecting online.

    Start-up Pages

You can sort your bookmarks into folders, and if you want really easy access to them, you can choose to make your bookmarks file your 'start up' or Home Page. Usually when you first use Netscape, the start up page takes you to Netscape's Home page. You can replace this with your Bookmarks file by:

    • finding your bookmarks file using file manager In Windows (usually bookmark.htm in the Netscape directory)

    • choose the Options menu, then General Preferences, then Appearances. In the dialogue box, replace whatever is there with the pathway to your bookmark file

You can make your home page to be anywhere either locally (a file on your own computer) or globally (using a URL). For example, I find it very useful to make my start up page link to The Hotsheet. This is a list of links to search engines, e-zines and other very useful sites. It is an extremely good jumping off place for research into most areas of the Web. Its URL is http://www.tstimpreso.com/hotsheet/
