A Browser is a program which lets you open a hypertext document. The browser
allows you to view the contents of nodes (or 'pages') and of navigating from
one page to another regardless of where in the world the computers which have these pages are based. Netscape, and Microsoft's Explorer have become the main
competitors for the WWW browser market, having taken over from the Mosaic
software originally developed by CERN. Netscape has over 80% of the Browser
market and its two originators (one a US college student) are now
millionaires. Both Netcape and Microsoft provide the basic software for free
and it can be downloaded directly from the sites on the Web. Netscape makes
its money by encouraging people to pay for an upgrade of their software to
their "Gold" version which has additional facilities.
