Telnet Today
One problem with Telnet is it's relative un-user-friendliness. Many of the applications
we use telnet for are available and in a potentially more user-friendly configuration,
and as such are used more regularly. Many people who use the net a lot never use telnet.
In the following sessions we will be looking at Moos and IRC. Moos are directly accessed via Telnet, but in this way they are extremely difficult to use, there is no split screen for writing
your message, it is on the main screen. This means that if there were lots of people on your Moo, it would be difficault to keep track of your message before you sent it. If this sounds confusing, do not worry, it will become more clear during the following sessions. Just keep in mind that telnet is not one of the most popular internet tools, and many of its uses are helped by other software.
Exercises
- In your internet software icon, open up Telnet.
You will either be given a connection window, prompting you to put in an
address, or you will get a blank screen where you have to go up to the File
and then to Open Connection. This then also brings up the connection window.
- In the box labeled Host/Session Name, enter this address:149.170.166.233 23, this is the address to telnet into MMU library. Browse around for a while.
- Check: Did you successfully browse the library, enter in the form the title and author of three books that you have found, include information on how many copies are available and how many copies are out.
- Now we are going to do the same thing, but this time we are going to gain our access via the WWW. In the location window at the tool bar of netscape type http://MPClient2.talis.mmu.ac.uk, this is the address to access MMU library via the web. Browse around for a while.
- Check: Did you successfully browse the library, enter in the form the title and author of three books that you have found, include information on how many copies are available and how many copies are out.
- Now simply enter into the form, your preference, Direct Telnet or Telnet via the Web.
