Services Accessible Via Telnet
There are theoretically an endless amounts of services accessible by telnet.
Certainly most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are accessible via telnet,
thereby if you have accounts on a number of access providers you can telnet
to any one of them.
Other people or machines on the internet offer a wide variety of
services through special ports, and machines in local or wide area networks.
Some of the more noteable are M.U.D.s which stand for multi-user dimensions,
usually gaming environments in which all participants in the game are real
people from all over the globe.
Other services such as internet relay chat (irc) can also be accessed by
telnet, in addition to gopher, archie, netsearches, and myriad of related
programs and information servers.
Even bulletin board systems that have set up shop on the internet are
accessible via telnet. These servers are quite similar to telneting to any
other internet host, except that environment upon entry is modelled after
the traditional BBS.
Telnet is the ability for your screen and keyboard to become part of any
other machine, almost anywhere in the globe. To a degree it even lets your
monitor and keyboard become the globe.
