    Telneting via a web browser

Telneting to a remote computer via web browser is basically the same as telneting "directly". The chief difference is that instead of you having to find and open the telnet client and specify the address of the remote computer, the web browser does it for you when you click on a link to a telnet-accessible resource. For instance, instead of having to open the telnet application and supply the address of the University of Washington's online catalog (which is uwin.u.washington.ed u); you might have been reading through a list of links to library catalogs and simply been able to click on University of Washington's Library Catalog. In this case, the URL for the resource is: telnet://uwin.u.was hington.edu, where "telnet" specifies to the browser the Internet protocol to use to connect to this resource, and uwin.u.washington.edu, specifies the address.

    Exercise

To configure your Netscape browser to invoke your telnet Application when clicking on a telnet link, you must go to 'General Preferences' under the 'Options' Menu. Then select 'Applications'. Select the 'Browse' button along side Telnet and select your Telnet Application from your Hard disk.
