Introduction to MUDs, MOOs and MUSHs
MUD - Multi-User-Dungeon
MOO - Multi-User-Dungeon, Object-Oriented
MUSH - Multi-User-Shared-Hallucinations
MUDs, MOO's and MUSH's are introduced together as they are all related applications, historically MOOs grew out of MUDs and MUSHs grew out of Moos. In this section you will be visiting a MOO and thus most of the information set out will be refering specifically to MOOs as apose to the others, commands and functions change slightly.
These places are areas of cyberspace dedicated to social
activity. On a MUD, MOO or MUSH, you are not necessarily expected to give Real Life (RL)
information. This is particularly the case for MOOs here role play and fantasy
are important elements of the "game" or simulation. When you first log onto a MOO you
will have to get used to the set up. You are communicating speech and actions
and expressions via text, so it is a sort of completely new communication tool.
Everything that is said or done is happening in real time, but remotely. For Example,
One person called DOT could be in Norway talking to SPOT in France, but communicating
via a computer in Holland. You probably know enough about Telnet now to
realise that you are telnetting into another computer, specified by the address.
This is what happens on MOOs too as it is accesed through a telnet connection.
As will be explained in the Telent section, the Telnet interface is does not lend itself
to MOOing. For this reason, it is possible to gain access to a MOO client that
will help you with your input and commands.
