What Command Do I Use To Join A List?
- If you have the address to which to send the command then you may want to
send a message consisting simply of the word HELP before you do anything
else and this will tell you how to subscribe to particular lists.
- If you are already reasonably familiar with the available commands but cannot remember what works with what, here is a rough list. Remember that all commands are to be in the body of the message and that a subject line is not necessary.
listproc, listserv, mailserv
"subscribe namelist firstname lastname"
majordomo
"subscribe namelist"
mailbase
"join namelist firstname lastname"
- Your firstname and lastname mean that the list manager will actually know
what you are called rather than just your email address.
James Milles of Saint Louis University Law Library has
compiled an excellent introduction to Mail List Manager Commands which
covers both the basics of joining and leaving a list, and some of the more
advanced commands, and with his permission we have incorporated this into
our site in its entirety.
When you get your subscription confirmation you should save the message as
it will tell you how to unsubscribe. If you use a folder called
subscriptions to keep this message in it will also serve remind you what you
have subscribed to, and you can use this as a checklist when you decide to
unsubscribe.
