Why Mailing Lists?Mailing lists enable people with similar interests from all over the world to communicate and share information with each other regardless of constraints of time and space. This has enabled the formation of many 'virtual communities' based on on-line technologies. There are many people interested in the same interests, issues, questions, opportunities, ideas, etc. as yourself. Information can be passed between people through distribution lists. However, in order to make the group more publically accessible, and to benefit from people's contribution who would not be on your distribution lists, the idea of the mailing list was born. There is only one copy of the list held on the listserver (software based on the computer hosting the mailing list. People decide for themselves whether to be on it or not, and there is a list of lists that people can check through for interesting subjects to subscribe to.
