FTP Exercise for Mac users
The following describes the steps necessary to locate and download files from the Internet using your FTP Application. Study the steps then complete the tasks set at the bottom of the Page. If you have any problems downloading any of the files please contact us by e-mail or phone.
- Open up the software, FETCH using the Apple menu. This will automatically
bring up the Open Connection Box.
- User ID = Anonymous
- Password = Your e-mail address
- Host = The address where you want to fetch a file, eg ftp.ira.uka.de
- Directory = The directory in the remote computer that contains the file, eg. /pub/systems/mac
- Click on OK, this brings up list of files at the host. Click on what you want, eg,Netscape 2.02
- This brings up a new list, now click on Mac, this is basically working through the different subdirectories until you find the specific file you want.
- To download, you can either double click on the file, or go to GET FILE and then in Save Converted Binhex - choose a file from the desktop to down load it into and then sort it out into your hard drive afterwards.
tip:
When you enter the directory path into the directory box only place /pub into it.
Go to the public directory first then select each directory in turn, slowly making your way to the desired file by following the path set out to you below. For some reason Fetch does not like being given full directory paths. It should do but it doesn't. Sometimes it does work however we would suggest you form the habit of following the path directory by directory.
