    Headers and Footers

    Headers

"At minimum the header of a WWW page should contain a prominent title at or very near the top of the page. Graphics placed above the title line should not be so large that they force the title off the page on standard office-size monitors (640x480 pixels)."

    Footers

"Footers, the elements at the bottom of WWW pages, are extremely important in identifying the origin, authorship, author contact information, legal status, and last revision date of the page, and are often the best place to locate local links to your home page."

Footers should include some or all of the following:

    • Author's name
    • Author's institutional affiliation (if any)
    • Hypertext link(s) to other related local pages, or to the home page.
    • Copyright marks and language, copyright year.
    • Last revision date of the page.
    • Author's email address.
    • Mailing address.

Some of the above can be included so that they are only visible when you view the document source. Such "invisible" lines are added using an ! following the angled bracket that always starts off an HTML command. View this page as document source, which you will find under the view pull down menu, to see an example in the header.
