The Advanced Internet Training Course

The Advanced Internet Training course is designed to give you the confidence to use the Internet to your best advantage. It is a free course that is delivered over the WWW. You can learn at your own pace, and in any location.

Why are these skills useful?

You can't help but notice that the Internet is being talked about everywhere these days. Just look around you. Have you noticed how your favourite television programmes, billboard adverts, magazines, and business cards include web site and email addresses?

The Advanced Internet Training Course provides the opportunity to find out what all the hype is about. In the process you will gain skills that will stop you feeling confused or scared of being left behind. With this new knowledge, you can use the Internet yourself, help your children with their studies, improve your job prospects, keep in contact with children at university, or simply have fun!

Introduction to the World Wide Web

Have you noticed how everybody seems to have a web site address these days? You see them on billboards, magazines, business cards, and even at the end of your favourite TV show.

The World Wide Web (WWW) module will give you the skills to see for yourself what all the fuss is about. You will become familiar with the Internet browser, which is what you are using to see this page. By the time you have finished this module you will be ready to adapt the browser to your individual needs, and be ready to have fun surfing the WWW.

The World Wide Web is a large place, so to help make surfing more fun we recommend students use Search Engines. Students can learn how to use these in the Search Engines module.

Electronic Mail

Are you one of those people who likes letters but never seems to get to finding pen, paper and stamps? Do you want to talk to Auntie Mabel in Canada or your children at university, but can't afford the long distance charges or find the right time to call? Or maybe you are sick and tired of seeing paper and post-it notes litter the office. Whatever your reason, email is really going to appeal to you!

Email is an inexpensive, easy and popular means of communication. It allows you to send letters, and even files, to other people within a few seconds.

Email is also needed to use Mailing Lists and Bulletin Boards.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Have you ever wanted to get the latest version of your favourite software, but just don't have time to go and buy it? Or are you madly into computer games, but all you've got are old games that are no longer a challenge or just plain boring? Or have you hopes of creating your own web site in the future? Yes? Then the FTP module, will be particularly useful for you.

FTP is the tool that allows you to get software from the Internet as well as put up your own work so that other people can look at it. This course is a must for people who love to play computer games!

Search Engines

Search Engines are like big, interactive telephone directories, that allow your fingers to do the walking over the Internet. If you know how to use a search engine effectively, you can save lots of time and money as the most relevant results for your search will come up first time.

The Search Engines module is a key element of the Advanced Internet Training course as it will help you find places on the Internet that have web pages, mailing lists, bulletin boards, software available to FTP, and sites for real time communication.

Mailing Lists and Bulletin Boards

If you have an interest in something, but no one to talk to about it, then Mailing Lists and Bulletin Boards are for you! There are countless topics that are bound to arouse your interest; pets, pub walks, parenting, DIY, fan clubs, computers, football . . . whatever your specialist subject, you will find other people with the same interest here!

To use mailing lists and bulletin boards you will need to know how to use Email.

Real Time Communication

Imagine going to a party, and having a great conversation, but none of the people at the party are in the same room! Real Time Communication allows people to chat to others all over the world without leaving their computer. The Real Time Communication element of the Advanced Internet Training course includes three modules.
  • MUDs, MOOs & MUSHs
  • Telnet
  • Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

After completing these modules you will be able to play games, meet new people, have business meetings from home, and contribute to the making of a virtual community.
