What is Getting Online?

Getting Online is a free programme of courses delivered via the World Wide Web. It is designed to take participants effortlessly through all aspects of the Internet. You can learn at your own pace, and in any location.

Who runs Getting Online?

Getting Online is delivered by IDEA (Innovation in Digital and Electronic Art) and MiiD (Manchester Institute for Information Delivery) and supported by the European Social Fund and Further Education Funding Council.

Can anyone enrol?

To be eligible, learners must be resident in England and aged 16 or over. This is a requirement of our current funding arrangement.

What do I need?

All you need is access to a Macintosh or PC computer that has an Internet connection, and an email account. It is as simple as that!

When you register we will provide a Student Identification Number (ID), which enables you to access the course content and check your progress.

What courses are available?

There are currently two Getting Online courses on offer, with more to come soon.

  • Advanced Internet Training
  • HTML Tools

Advanced Internet Training

This is the foundation course of the Getting Online training programme. It covers all aspects of the Internet, including Email, the World Wide Web, FTP, Mailing Lists and Bulletin Boards. Introduces Telnet, MUDs and Internet Relay Chat (IRC).

On successful completion of the Advanced Internet Training course you are eligible for a nationally-recognised EMFEC certificate Level 3 (Advanced), issued by East Midlands Further Education Consortium (City College).

All students are automatically enrolled in Advanced Internet Training when they register as a GO student. Completing the course is optional, though it is strongly recommended.

HTML Tools

Introduces the basic tools needed to produce a simple web page and provides guidance on design to ensure you achieve good looking results.

Links to the websites of HTML Tool students can be seen by otrher GO students in the GO Learner Centre.

On successful completion of the HTML Tools course you are eligible for a nationally-recognised EMFEC certificate Level 2, issued by East Midlands Further Education Consortium (City College).

How will I be taught?

Each of the GO courses is organised into a number of modules, each with several pages of information, and step by step instructions.

As you progress through the module, you complete tasks which help you become competent in the new skills you are learning. Take it at your own pace - you are in control! You can complete the training at home or work, at weekends, late at night - but unfortunately not while you walk the dog!

How will I be tested?

At the end of each module there are a number of questions to help assess your progress. Simply complete the exercises and submit them electronically. There are automated systems in place which enable you to track your progress at any time during your study.

How will I be supported?

You are not alone. Just because you complete the training from a computer you don't need to feel isolated. Many students use the GO mailing list to share information and support each other in their studies. Tutor input is also available by telephone and email (see Contact GO).

Will my 'phone bill rocket?

Online time can be minimised by downloading the course to your own computer. The whole course fits on a single floppy disk for easy portability.

Once downloaded, you only need to go online again to complete your learning tasks, submit exercises and when you visit the Learner Centre.
